OUTPORT, 1978-1981
Traveling in Newfoundland and Labrador in the summers of 1977-81, I visited small, isolated fishing villages, accessible only by boat or narrow dirt roads. These outports were on the cusp of extinction as the Canadian government prepared to shut down the overfished cod industry. Entire towns were being relocated to the mainland as a way of life and livelihood ended. With the men at work in their boats, and women inside their houses, village children passed their leisure summer hours congregating upon the rocky and rugged shores of this disappearing culture.
